Avocado Mattress is a company that makes mattresses, bedding, and other sleep accessories all from certified non-toxic, organic, and natural materials. Their more popular mattresses include the Avocado Green Mattress, Avocado Latex Mattress, and Avocado Vegan Mattress.
Since 2016, Avocado Mattress has continued to raise the bar in their commitment to environmentally and socially responsible business practices across their entire supply chain, making products that are safe for human health, while enhancing the well-being of people and protecting the planet.
In May of 2020, Avocado Mattress went through a rigorous process to meet the highest standard of verification in environmental and social responsibility to achieve certification as a B Corporation. With a high score of 126.2, well beyond the 80 point minimum threshold, they have the highest impact scores in community, workers, and environment categories.
Avocado Mattress high score in the community category is because of their commitment to 1% for the Planet. As a member, they donate 1% of their revenues to vetted non-profits in an effort to address issues related to climate change, healthy food systems, land management, water resources, pollution, and wildlife diversity.
High scores in the workers category is a result of Avocado Mattresses competitive wages at all levels, and extensive employee benefits. The employee benefits include paid time off for volunteer days, and subsidized membership accounts for fitness and meditation to encourage mental health, and physical well-being.
Avocado Mattress’ high score in the environment category for B Corp Certification intersects with their Climate Neutral certification. The high score is a result of the company achieving net-zero carbon emissions through wind and solar energy, and their Climate Neutral certification. With Climate Neutral, Avocado Mattresses’ entire carbon footprint is measured, tracked, and verified, from raw material production and shipping, to manufacturing and the purchase of carbon offsets.
With Climate Neutral, Avocado Mattress is able to raise the bar by going carbon negative – offsetting more carbon emissions than the company generates to help fight climate change.
The Avocado Green Mattress, Vegan Mattress, Luxury Organic Crib Mattress, Foundation, Green Topper, Vegan Topper, Mattress Pad Protector, and Green Pillow are all GREENGUARD Gold Certified by UL Environment. These products have gone through rigorous scientific testing to meet the highest emissions standards for exposure to more than 360 airborne chemicals and pollutants such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), formaldehyde, and phthalates.
The GREENGUARD Gold certification ensures that these products are safe enough to be acceptable for use in sensitive environments such as schools and healthcare facilities.
Since the GREENGUARD Gold certification assures that these products designed for use in indoor spaces meet the most stringent chemical emissions limits, contributing to the creation of healthier interior spaces, theses products can also qualify for credits towards a LEED certification under the core category: Indoor Environmental Quality for Interior Design and Construction (LEED ID+C).
FSC (Forest Stewardship Council)
Avocado Mattress’ bed frames and furniture are FSC certified, assuring that all their wood used to make their products are sourced from responsibly managed forests. Avocado Mattress handcrafts their wood products from 100% real FSC-certified alder, a fast growing, renewable birch tree, and 100% real FSC-certified Douglas fir.
GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard)
GOLS is the world’s first standard for materials and processing of organic latex and finished latex foam, especially in sleep products like mattresses. The certification ensures the organic status of latex, up to 95% organic materials throughout the entire supply chain.
GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)
GOTS is a globally recognized textile processing standard for organic fibers, including environmental and social criteria of the entire textile supply chain.
The Avocado Mattress factory based in Los Angeles is only 1 in 5 (out of hundreds of mattress facilities) that currently operate GOTS and GOLS organic certified production facilities, meeting the rigorous standards as verified by Control Union® to manufacture certified organic products. Avocado also owns their own GOLS/GOTS organic certified latex farm and processing facility in India.
With GOLS and GOTS certifications, Avocado Mattress ensures farm workers, factory workers, consumers, and the environment are all protected from the use of harmful hazardous chemicals, and harmful airborne chemical residues from sourcing to end product.
OEKO-TEX certified textiles meet strict testing standards of textiles for harmful substances so they are safe for human use and safe for the environment. Textiles go through rigorous testing to be free from allergenic dyes, pesticides, chlorinated phenols, heavy metals, formaldehyde, and chloro-organic carriers. Avocado Mattress’ organic certified latex, wool, and cotton have received STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®: Class 1 certifications (19.0.79546, 19.HIN.68466 & 15.HIN.75800, Hohenstein HTTI).
